If given the chance, Raphael Colantonio would make a return to Dishonored a reality, but it would require Microsoft’s approval…
Sadly, Dishonored 3 was never made, as sales of the second installment fell short of publisher Bethesda’s expectations, and it doesn’t appear that Microsoft (who have since acquired ZeniMax Media, Bethesda’s parent company) are willing to move forward with the IP. Arkane Lyon, the developer of Dishonored 2, is currently working on a Blade game led by Deathloop director Dinga Bakaba, and Arkane Austin was shut down after the failure of Redfall 2023.
Arkane co-founder and Dishonored co-director Raphaël Colantonio at least has the will to make it happen. During the Quad Damage podcast (from which we quoted yesterday that Colantonio hadn’t finished System Shock Remake), he said that he usually likes to work on completely new games, and that he felt that way especially after the first Dishonored. That’s why Harvey Smith, who directed 2017’s Prey at Arkane Austin, ended up directing the second installment. The game is technically in the same series as Human Head’s 2006 cliffhanger-ending FPS, but the name was forced on the project against Colantonio’s wishes.
“After Dishonored 1, the last thing I wanted to do for the next four years of my life was Dishonored 2. In general, I like to create new things. I’d love to get back into the series. I mean, we’re just talking hypothetically at this point. I could see myself working on Dishonored 3 right now because it’s been so long that, you know, why not? I had a document on Dishonored 3. Harvey Smith has a document on Dishonored 3. I think Dinga Bakaba has one too, which of those three versions will ever see the light of day, now we’re talking science fiction at this point,” Colantonio said.
Colantonio’s new game at WolfEye Studio will be an action-RPG with a first-person perspective (but it will be an immersive simulator…) and will favor density over size.
