Gothic Remake: Alkimia Has Updated the Demo! [VIDEO]

Following community feedback, Alkimia Interactive has reworked the demo version of Gothic Remake and released an updated build on Steam.

Alkimia Interactive has officially launched an improved version of the Gothic Remake demo on Steam. After its February appearance at Steam Next Fest, the original demo met with criticism, prompting the developers to address several key issues flagged by the community. The studio acknowledged that the game had been modeled after the slower-paced movement style of Red Dead Redemption 2, but this clashed with player expectations for something snappier and more reactive.

“We’re seeing a lot of things that weren’t on our radar, like the movement in the game. Our main reference was really Red Dead Redemption 2, which is a very slow paced game in terms of movement. But the clear feedback was that people like it to be more reactive, and that certain actions that are repeated over and over again should be quick, which means not realistic,” the team explained.

They stressed that the demo is not representative of the final product: it’s locked to a specific time of day and weather condition, which limits visual variety. “It doesn’t do justice to the full game,” they admitted.

“You also have to realize that the Gothic Remake demo does have daily routines, but they are nowhere near as detailed as the original. […] They are kind of all in an extreme situation because they are trapped,” the developers elaborated. As for progression, the demo might give players the impression that leveling up will be quick in the final game—an assumption the devs rejected, saying the pacing and power curve remain faithful to the original experience.

Combat was another major concern, particularly the hit detection and sound effects. “There were just clear bugs in there. Sometimes you’d think you’d hit with the sword because the models are touching each other, but it wouldn’t recognize the hit, so it gives you this awkward feeling of, oh, the combat system is bad. But it’s a glitch, it’s a bug,” they wrote. While admitting the issues, Alkimia emphasized their ongoing commitment to polish the game, stating, “There’s a lot of stuff we need to improve, much, much more, and we’ll keep working on it until the very end.”

Alkimia Interactive has been developing the Gothic Remake for over five years now. The project seems to be nearing a pivotal point.
