TECH NEWS – By 2027, the Cupertino company’s smartphone could undergo a major design overhaul, with lots of glass and a decidedly more complex design.
Apple is planning a major design overhaul for the 20th anniversary of the iPhone in 2027. The look of the device will align with what users have been demanding for years: a fully screen-dominated front, free of distractions. Apple might eliminate bezels entirely and introduce under-display technology for Face ID sensors and the front camera. However, due to the complexity of the production process, it is rumored that manufacturing will take place in China, although Apple has expanded facilities in both India and Vietnam.
We’ve been seeing concept images for years showing an iPhone with a full front display, and it seems this vision may finally come to life. The last radical design change came in 2017 with the launch of the iPhone X for the 10th anniversary. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg noted in his Power On newsletter that the phone is expected to feature an extraordinarily complex design. Without bezels, it could look and feel entirely futuristic.
The phone will reportedly make extensive use of glass to give it the appearance of a seamless pane—evoking the look of the original iPhone from 2007. Apple is also facing the challenge of U.S. tariffs introduced during the Trump administration, which have significantly increased production costs. Despite this, the company reportedly still prefers China for producing the 20th anniversary iPhone. Current information suggests only low- and mid-tier iPhones will be assembled in India.
These factors could make the 20th anniversary iPhone very expensive: tariffs and design complexity are the main cost drivers. However, Apple has already moved towards manufacturing more components in-house, including new C-series modems, which may help reduce costs. Regardless of strategy, if tariffs on China drive prices up, consumers will ultimately bear the full cost.
