PlayStation Plus Premium: Sony’s Shameful Addition of More Games

Sony is proudly showcasing a few new additions to PlayStation Plus Premium—but frankly, they’re nothing to celebrate.

Five games are coming to the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, available only through a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. Under normal circumstances, this would be a monthly update—but in May, Sony only added one title. So it’s fair to ask: Is this subscription still worth it?

This is the best they can do?

First up is Deus Ex: The Conspiracy (the PS2 version of the original Deus Ex), arriving on June 17. Is this really the only Premium addition for June? Then on July 15, Twisted Metal III and Twisted Metal 4 will be added—two classic PS1 titles. Again, are these all we’re getting in July?

Finally, sometime this summer (likely in July or August), the original PS1 versions of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis will join the library. These are the originals—not the recent remakes.

Too little, too late

Deus Ex is a legendary game, but it came out on PC in 2000 and can now run on any system with a couple of mods. The other four PS1 games? Two are Sony’s own Twisted Metal titles, and two are Capcom’s survival horror classics. How were none of these already in the catalog?

Sony is now patting itself on the back for something that should have been done a long time ago. At this price point, the PlayStation Plus Premium tier deserves far better than sporadic trickles of retro content.
