[SOP 2025] Sword of the Sea: It’s Rare When a Game Debuts on PlayStation Plus! [VIDEO]

It’s not arriving on the lowest subscription tier (remember when Rocket League launched this way, before the days of tiered PS Plus?), which makes Giant Squid’s move rather bold.

From the visionary mind behind Abzu, The Pathless, and Journey comes Sword of the Sea, an atmospheric surfing adventure driven by the high-speed motion of the Hoversword — a hybrid between skateboard, snowboard, and surfboard. Carve your way forward across undulating terrain, building speed to soar off wave crests and perform flips, spins, and grabs with ease on ramps, pipes, and wall rides. The gameplay walks a perfect line between thrilling action and smooth, meditative movement.

Explore a land in perpetual motion, with massive tidal flows and subtle ripples shaping an ever-changing sea of sand dunes, rendered in breathtaking detail. Surf across deserts, icy peaks, and mysterious, wave-like landscapes brimming with secrets. You play as the resurrected Wraith, awakening in a forgotten necropolis to uncover the ancient sea buried beneath the surface. Along your path, you’ll encounter remnants of a long-lost civilization tucked within collapsing tombs and skatepark-like ruins. Transform dry dunes into shimmering emerald waters and witness majestic marine life returning in dazzling numbers. Feel the spiritual magic of surfing as you restore life to a fading world — but beware the darkness beneath the waves.

Developed by the acclaimed indie studio Giant Squid, Sword of the Sea features the distinct visual style of creative director Matt Nava and a moving score by composer Austin Wintory. The duo previously collaborated on the award-winning Journey as well as the beloved indies Abzu and The Pathless. Sword of the Sea launches on PlayStation 5 and PC on August 19, and will be available on day one to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
