[SGF 2024] Scum: Leaving Early Access After Nearly Seven Years! [VIDEO]

Jagex’s (RuneScape!) multiplayer open-world game has been available on Early Access since August 29, 2018. This will soon change.

The world’s insatiable appetite for entertainment has turned to bloodlust as the entertainment behemoth TEC1 prepares to premiere the second season of its hit TV show, SCUM. This new season moves the contest from rugged indoor arenas to lush forests, rolling fields, and rugged terrain on TEC1’s private SCUM Island. Fan favorites and new prisoners alike will clash in a ruthless war of survival, battling for the support of viewers, producers, and corporate sponsors in the hopes of achieving fame, receiving gifts, and earning a chance at life after death. SCUM aims to evolve the multiplayer open-world survival game by offering unprecedented levels of character customization, control, and progression. In this game, knowledge and skills are the ultimate weapons for long-term survival. SCUM strikes a unique balance between complex simulation and intense action in the next generation of survival games by combining the methodical planning and management of hardcore survival with optional PvP “network events” available to everyone at any time.

SCUM utilizes dozens of complex systems that allow players to delve deeply into managing their character. Players can delve into the minutiae of the survival experience through systems that control their character’s metabolism, inertia during movement, and how quickly layers of clothing dry on and off the body. The devil is in the details. Traverse and explore 225 square kilometers of terrain, including dense forests, picturesque beaches, serene fields, abandoned towns, and rundown airfields. Each location tells its own story and is filled with wildlife and dangers. The massive terrain can be traversed on foot or by land, air, or sea vehicles.

With a click of a button, enter TEC1’s ongoing network events and be whisked to enclosed areas of the island for white-knuckle, player-versus-player gameplay. Volunteer for an event and compete against other prisoners for fame points and valuable loot. The current version of SCUM includes basic crafting, combat, and customization systems. However, the feature set and gameplay will continually expand to include more advanced mechanics and variety. There will also be a metanarrative in which players can complete missions in hopes of one day getting off the island. Up to 64 players can survive together on a server, and you can rent your own server right from the in-game menu.

SCUM will exit early access on June 17. It will then transition to version 1.0 on PC. There is no news on a console version.
