Following the Hitman games, this was a significant change for the Danish team because the protagonist is not solely focused on the task at hand this time.
007: First Light seems like an easy step for IO Interactive. Agent 47 is basically Bond, except for his hair, sex drive, and occasional witty (or annoying) quips. However, as the studio explained in an interview with PC Gamer, it’s not that simple because 47 and Bond are actually nothing alike. While Bond and 47 have some superficial similarities — they’re both sharp dressers who kill people for a living — that’s really where the similarities end. According to Hakan Abrak, the CEO of IO Interactive, Agent 47 is an empty shell, while James Bond is a fully developed character.
This personality is a significant factor in Bond’s ability to accomplish feats that Agent 47, a silent killer in name, could never achieve. Martin Emborg, the director of narrative and scenes, says that players of 007 First Light can use stealth infiltration, but the new game has a lot more forward momentum. This means you can be more direct in how you handle things. Emborg says that in Hitman, you need patience to observe the patrol and figure out that the guard likes wine. Bond, on the other hand, can walk through the front door, chat with the guard, or hit him.
007: First Light has also forced a change in priorities for IO Interactive. The company is approaching the Bond character from its own perspective but still has to respect the foundation of who he is because he is much more than a vaguely cartoonish assassin who never smiles. Rasmus Poulsen, the art director, says that if Agent 47 is essentially the bad guy and a single-minded killer, then Bond is the hero. So, they’re much more focused on Bond’s character journey and his mission to save the world.
007 First Light is expected to be released sometime next year for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
