Hideo Kojima has once again cautioned fans: the Sony-backed spy title Physint remains in the conceptual stage, with Kojima himself being the sole person working on it. Born from the persistent requests of Metal Gear fans, the project is still many years from release.
Fans were thrilled when Hideo Kojima announced his return to the spy genre with Physint. Revealed in early 2024, the Metal Gear-style game was touted by Kojima as the “culmination” of his career, but its launch is still far off – something he’s reiterated in a recent interview. When asked about the development team, he revealed that there’s only one person currently shaping the game. That person is Kojima himself.
Speaking to IndieWire (via The Gamer), Kojima discussed the development and launch of Death Stranding 2 as well as his upcoming projects. When asked about his current workload, he explained: “I’m checking data from [Death Stranding 2] players around the world – what kind of weapons they’re using, the routes they’re taking, all that data. I’m also spotting small bugs here and there, so I’m deciding where and what to fix.”
“I’ve also started working on OD with the team because it’s a new project, and I’m doing Physint on my own because it’s in the conceptualization phase. So I’m doing that,” he added. This won’t surprise anyone following Kojima Productions’ news; just weeks ago, the director warned that it would be “another five or six years” before the spy game is released. At least we know he’s aiming high – promising the game will be so realistic that “if your mom walks in and sees you playing, she’ll think you’re watching a movie.”
Physint Exists Thanks to Metal Gear Fans
Despite its early development stage, Kojima has made it clear that Physint exists because of the persistent support of Metal Gear fans. After leaving Konami and founding his studio, Kojima Productions, he created the Death Stranding series – but eventually realized that “a lot of people wanted me to do something like Metal Gear.” The constant fan requests ultimately pushed him to begin work on the project.
