Will There Be More Open Sections in Resident Evil Requiem?

According to a rumor, the latest installment of Capcom’s nearly 30-year-old franchise may include more open segments for players to explore.

Resident Evil: Requiem will make its playable debut next week at Gamescom. Capcom insider Dusk Golem wrote on Twitter that while the game won’t be as open-world as originally envisioned, there will still be open levels—such as Raccoon City—that players can explore using a vehicle. Capcom is reportedly working hard to improve the level performance in Resident Evil: Requiem, which is a good sign in light of the technical issues faced in Monster Hunter Wilds. The insider also mentioned that Leon’s combat sections have been enhanced with some elements inspired by The Last of Us Part II.

“Right now, they’ve officially talked about the ability to switch between first- and third-person perspectives on the fly (and basically designed two different games side by side to make this possible, since getting both perspectives to work together required massive overhauls), the new lighting/shadow engine, and the hair engine from Pragmata. Additionally, we know the stalker uses a new dynamic AI system that’s designed to behave uniquely and intelligently throughout the game. There are a few other innovations. I know some of them, but certainly not all.

One small detail I can share: they’ve been working hard to ensure good performance in open-level environments like Raccoon City and to include a vehicle to traverse the area. The combat sections with Leon have seen major innovation. Honestly, there are a few elements reminiscent of The Last of Us Part II, but there are also some unique mechanics. They’ve focused on giving Grace’s segments more environmental physics systems and interactivity, requiring her to interact more with the surroundings and to balance light and darkness. That’s all I’ll say—and honestly, all I know. But there’s still a lot to be revealed,” wrote Dusk Golem.

Currently, Resident Evil: Requiem has only one officially confirmed protagonist: Grace Ashcroft, an FBI technical analyst sent to investigate a series of strange deaths at a hotel in Raccoon City, where her mother died eight years earlier. However, Capcom has a history of keeping other playable characters secret until release, so it wouldn’t be a shock if the rumor about Leon proves true.

Resident Evil: Requiem is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC on February 27.
