A new expansion called Blizzard in Baator promises fresh areas, restored cut content, and a brand-new adventure for one of the most legendary RPGs ever created. While the full release may take up to six years, the first act is already arriving this year, making it worth the wait for fans. Planescape: Torment is about to receive the revival players have long dreamed of.
Though it never achieved the mainstream popularity of Fallout or Baldur’s Gate, Planescape: Torment is often considered the crown jewel of CRPG’s golden age. Its surreal setting, eccentric characters, and emphasis on dialogue-driven quest resolution rather than combat set it apart from its contemporaries. Its influence can be traced all the way to modern RPGs like Disco Elysium. Despite its legacy, few new stories have emerged within the Planescape universe. The closest spiritual successor was Torment: Tides of Numenera, though that title explored a completely different world. Now, a Polish modding team is stepping up to change that with a massive expansion for Black Isle’s cult classic.
Dubbed the first-ever unofficial DLC for Planescape, Blizzard in Baator sends the Nameless One and his companions into a new district of Sigil before plunging them through the Nine Hells of Planescape down to the frozen wastes of Cania. There, they find themselves entangled in the endless cold war between the nine lords — the very conflict that gives the expansion its title. But the mod offers more than new locations. In an interview with Grimuar.pl, the developers revealed that the expansion will feature two new recruitable companions, new planar monsters, original music, and entirely new cutscenes.
Beyond that, the project restores numerous lost elements from the original Planescape, including voice recordings, missing items, and graphical assets left hidden in the game’s files. The team stresses, however, that these restored details are minor compared to the vast amount of new content they’ve created. Since Planescape has always been defined by its writing and storytelling, the plot of Blizzard in Baator remains under wraps, though the modders promise it will center on the core cast. Built primarily around D&D’s second edition, the expansion will also incorporate features from later rulesets and is designed as a higher-level experience that begins when the Nameless One returns from the outer plane of Carceri.
The developers don’t expect the full project to be completed before 2031, though they are hopeful for an earlier release. The first act is slated to launch later this year and is estimated to offer around twelve hours of gameplay. Blizzard in Baator will be available in both English and Polish, though players may notice some differences in naming conventions due to its roots in the Polish version of the game.
