Borderlands 4: Even One of Baldur’s Gate 3’s Devs Feel Sorry!

Randy Pitchford, the head of Gearbox Software, has once again taken to Twitter. This has become somewhat of a habit for him, but this time one of Larian Studios’ executives responded.

Borderlands 4 was a critical and commercial success, but it had technical issues at launch. This is common with many other AAA games. The situation wasn’t helped by the fact that Pitchford had previously made comments online to players that weren’t well received. For example, he recently had an outburst about the pricing of Borderlands 4. Now, he’s telling players who insist on 4K that they’re to blame if the game released by his studio doesn’t work well.

Most studios don’t have to deal with their leaders causing chaos on social media; instead, they work quietly on patches. The Gearbox team didn’t envision the game’s release this way. Michael Douse, the release director for Baldur’s Gate 3, feels sorry for the rest of the team trying to fix the game and ensure players have the best experience possible. He tweeted that Pitchford should be locked in a cupboard for six months. When some responded that Pitchford should not be locked up and that they appreciated his honesty more than the company’s approved message, Douse agreed but clarified that he feels sorry for his team, who are just trying very hard to make players happy.

Pitchford’s honesty stands out because not many people in the gaming industry are as candid. Game development is difficult, and Pitchford’s response is not entirely unfair when he tells players that, if they think it’s so easy, they should do it themselves. However, the issue is not just that Borderlands 4 has frame rate issues; players are spending their hard-earned money on a game that should run without glitches.

The issues will be fixed, which is great, but that won’t ease the pain of knowing we spent money on a flawed product.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
