Since its launch, Hydroneer has become a tremendous sleeper hit among the crafting and base-building genres, selling over a million copies on Steam. Subsequent overhauls and the addition of new features, including couch cooperative multiplayer, have grown the game’s presence into a persistent online fan base. The gameplay features in Hydroneer will remain fully faithful to the PC release, but optimizations are being implemented to adapt the interface and controls for consoles.

It has a hands-on mining and crafting system in which players literally dig through the dirt to find smeltable ore and valuable gemstones. Players can use conveyor belts, automated harvesters, drills, and piping to build automated smelting factories and extract ore on a large scale. There is also an open world with multiple dig sites, NPC communities, quest-givers, and stores to interact with. The unique couch cooperative multiplayer feature allows up to four players to work together on engineering projects.

The upcoming console release will also include the Journey to Volcalidus expansion, which was first released in 2024. This expansion will be sold separately from the main game and will include a whole new world map in the land of Volcalidus. This enormous, sprawling world is over six times the size of the original game world. Players can make use of new automation technology powered by lava to introduce a new category of mining tech that allows them to dig deep into the ice shelves of Volcalidus. There is also a brand-new settlement in New Glade where players are given a full town to rebuild from the ground up. This provides an idyllic refuge from the harsh climate and unlocks new items for purchase as the town is restored.

Hydroneer was released for PC on May 8, 2020. However, according to Foulball Hangover‘s announcement, it will be released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series on May 8, 2026 – six years after its original release. The Nintendo Switch 2 is excluded again.
