FromSoftware is preparing a quality-of-life update for Elden Ring Nightreign’s toughest mode while also addressing a progression bug. The studio has, in a way, “betrayed” the Souls Bros community by softening Nightreign’s difficulty to reduce frustration. This is something FromSoftware almost never does.
The release of Depths of the Night turned Elden Ring Nightreign into an even harsher challenge, pushing even veterans to their limits. Players welcomed the roguelike expedition mode and its “depth” levels, but within a week, the discussion shifted from difficulty to whether defeats punished progress too harshly. FromSoftware has now stepped in with a series of changes.
According to Bandai Namco’s official website, the upcoming patch will allow players to voluntarily lower their Depth rank by one level and will add protection against rank demotion at Depths 3, 4, and 5. This means that a single loss won’t immediately push players down a level in these demanding stages. The company also acknowledged a bug that blocked players from ranking up after victories, promising a temporary fix along with additional quality-of-life adjustments for Depths of the Night.
These changes aim to keep the tension intact without stalling progression, and most importantly, to ensure more players can enjoy the new mechanics without getting stuck. The patch notes don’t specify a date and only mention an “upcoming update,” though outlets like Kotaku claim the adjustments are already live, meaning they could hit platforms within days. The tweaks should provide relief to thousands of players currently immersed in Elden Ring’s brutal Nightreign mode.
Beyond voluntary demotion, the patch ensures Depth 1 players won’t lose points when matched against higher-ranked opponents in Depth 2 or above. Additionally, if Elden Ring Nightreign experiences downtime or a server crash, players will be able to resume their session on Steam. These measures target frustration caused by unbalanced matchmaking and connection errors, balancing out progression. Meanwhile, the community continues to call for more bosses, maps, and events that add long-term variety—content likely arriving with paid DLC planned for late 2025.
