Digital Foundry confirms that FPS gradually worsens even on PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X. Borderlands 4’s console performance solution leaves analysts scratching their heads.
These days, almost any AAA game can launch with performance issues, and Borderlands 4 is no exception. Gearbox’s looter-shooter is a fantastic title, but poor optimization has left many players frustrated. Fortunately, the developers have promised improvements across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Now, Digital Foundry has joined the conversation.
Digital Foundry calls for urgent patches
According to Digital Foundry’s analysis, framerates on consoles degrade over 30–60 minutes of continuous play, with “drops below 60fps even on PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X”. Restarting the game temporarily restores performance, but “that shouldn’t be an expected solution for players.”
They suggest the culprit is a memory leak or cache not being cleared properly, requiring a patch as soon as possible. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford acknowledged the performance drops on PS5 Pro, recommending that players restart the game until fixes arrive. Meanwhile, PC builds have received stability updates, and developers urge players to let shaders recompile for 15 minutes after making graphics changes.
Even so, Steam reviews remain “Mixed”, and Digital Foundry cautions against using the “Bastard” graphics preset for now due to potential stuttering on high-end rigs. “Borderlands 4 justifies the six-year wait with major technical advancements via Unreal Engine 5, but its console performance falls short of the 60fps target, and a patch can’t come soon enough,” the analysts wrote (via IGN).
“On PS5 Pro and Series X, gradually worsening performance can result in painful stretches in the mid-30fps range. Restarting the game every hour is simply unacceptable. The lack of polish at launch is also evident in bugs. Once again, we’re left waiting for a patch to bail it out.”
On PC, enabling DLSS (or other upscaling tools) with frame generation is currently the best option.
