Borderlands 4 isn’t making life easy for speedrunners. Players using the Dialogue Skipper mod to skip cutscenes and chatter are discovering that their save files can become permanently corrupted. According to the developers, the game’s quest system is deeply tied to its voice lines, making this mod extremely risky to use.
Picture this: you’re grinding through missions in a looter shooter filled with endless dialogue. You install a mod to fast-forward the talk and get straight to the action — only to find that your save file is beyond repair hours later. That’s exactly what’s happening in Borderlands 4, and players are learning this the hard way.
The culprit is the Dialogue Skipper mod, which lets users skip conversations, auto-skip dialogue, and even speed up lengthy animations. It quickly became a hit among PC players, with some creators even suggesting that Gearbox should implement it officially. However, creative director Graeme Timmins told PC Gamer that using the mod can cause missions to break entirely, as the game’s quest system is tightly bound to its voice-over pipeline.
Timmins explained that the system behind Borderlands 4 is “much more complex and risky than it seems.” Since mission scripting, dialogue, and cutscenes are all interlinked, skipping them disrupts core logic and event triggers. Making this feature official would require major structural rewrites, something Gearbox can’t prioritize now as the studio focuses on performance improvements.
For now, the studio recommends that players avoid the mod entirely unless they’re saving constantly to protect their progress. Speedrunners and replay enthusiasts are most at risk — those who try to rush through the campaign might end up soft-locking their games. Although Gearbox has hinted at a potential long-term fix, the Dialogue Skipper mod remains a major danger for anyone using it.
Currently, Gearbox’s top priority is improving Borderlands 4’s performance on PC and finishing the Nintendo Switch 2 port, which has been delayed indefinitely. The studio has confirmed the game will target 30 FPS on the new console, with minor drops expected, making optimization a critical focus going forward.
