A Viking Epic You Can Play Now: NORSE: Oath of Blood Brings Tactical Combat and Settlement-Building, With a Free Steam Demo

There are only a handful of RPGs that look this sharp: a grounded Viking adventure often compared to Baldur’s Gate 3—and you can jump in for free today. NORSE: Oath of Blood is an ambitious, strategy-tinged project headed to consoles and PC, with a playable demo already live on Steam.

Plenty of fantasy RPGs inevitably get stacked up against Baldur’s Gate 3. Larian’s breakout hit popularized branching choices, multiple endings, and tactical battles for a massive audience. In that space, NORSE: Oath of Blood aims to add its own mark: a Viking RPG chasing a cinematic, Dungeons & Dragons-style presentation. Best of all, you can try it right now for free.

Developed by Arctic Hazard with Tripwire Presents (publishers of Chivalry 2), the game drops us into Viking-era Norway—an unspecified yet brutally authentic period of betrayal, blood, and war. You play as Gunnar, who watched his father slain by the ruthless Steinarr Far-Spear as flames consumed his home and legacy. The narrative is penned by Giles Kristian, award-winning author of Camelot and Golden Lion, lending historical grit and epic sweep.

From that foundation springs a classic yet engaging revenge arc: you’ll roam the land, forge alliances, and rebuild your settlement to carry on Jarl Gripr’s legacy. Key moments—including NPC dialogues—feature full voice acting and polished cinematics to sustain the game’s cinematic tone.

The soundtrack deserves special mention: dark neo-folk outfit Galdorcræft blends ancient and modern instruments—lyres, moraharpas, horns, and skin drums—to craft a ritual, epic mood. The studio says the music fuses “history, nature, and Viking mythology, immersing the player in a world steeped in spiritual resonance and cultural heritage.”

NORSE: Oath of Blood Is a Tactical RPG With a Management Layer

Combat is a marquee system: on a grid-based battlefield, each party member brings unique abilities. Gunnar can hoist an enemy and slam them down to leave them open to follow-ups; shield bashes can force aggro, while archer Sigrid unleashes area shots on a cooldown—depths that evoke Into the Breach.

Between fights, you’ll expand your camp: recruit villagers, build workshops, a smithy, and armories. That infrastructure upgrades gear and tightens resource management, extending the experience beyond combat and reinforcing the settlement-sim pillar.

This is an ambitious work-in-progress for PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. There’s no release date yet, but the Steam demo is live—letting players test combat and building well before launch.
