PlayStation Snags Ex-FromSoftware RPG — Chinese Myth Meets Classic God of War Energy in Loulan: The Cursed Sand on PS5 & PC

Backed by Sony’s China Hero Project, Loulan: The Cursed Sand blends a mournful, myth-steeped tale with brisk, old-school action. Veterans from FromSoftware and Santa Monica Studio lead the charge toward a PS5 and PC release.

Publishers are increasingly scouting beyond Japan as China, South Korea, and India push ambitious projects. PlayStation’s regional incubator fits that strategy: Sony will publish Loulan: The Cursed Sand on PS5 and PC.

You play as Cursed Sand, a resurrected skeletal warrior searching for his lost princess. The mood draws on the remarkably preserved, ~3,800-year-old “Princess Xiaohe” mummy, weaving mysticism with grief. Your journey spans the ruins of ancient Loulan — once a Silk Road waypoint — while clashing with factions that command the forces of sun and ice.

A God of War-like perspective and two combat modes: this is Loulan: The Cursed Sand

Loulan’s hook is its dual-stance combat under a semi-top-down camera that channels early God of War. In Sand Form, a golden cloak favors control and speed; in Skeleton Form, a colossal “sand blade” delivers crushing power. It’s classic one-versus-many brawling, refined for modern readability and pace.

Rivers of sand, long-buried ruins, and cities swallowed by time unfold beneath an aerial lens with arcade verve. The team cites stints at Santa Monica Studio, FromSoftware, and PlatinumGames, with clear nods to God of War and Japanese action mainstays like Dark Souls.

The ambition is to honor classic melee while layering in contemporary ideas — especially the evolving bond between the hero and his “living weapon.” There’s no date yet, but Loulan: The Cursed Sand is confirmed for PS5 and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store).
