PlayStation Portal: A Long-Awaited Feature May Be Coming Soon?

A leak tied to the PlayStation App points to a user-friendly upgrade for Sony’s handheld.

Judging by the evidence surfaced in the PlayStation App, PlayStation Portal could soon gain a much-requested capability. On the official PlayStation Portal subreddit, user GetTheWetsOn shared a screenshot from the store page of Deliver at All Costs that appears to confirm cloud streaming of owned digital games on PlayStation Portal with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.

The user added that the same note briefly appeared on the Dead Space Remake page before being removed. There is no official confirmation yet, but seeing the message on two separate product pages strongly suggests the option is in the pipeline.

Since PlayStation Portal’s surprisingly strong debut, Sony has repeatedly indicated it is considering expanding the device’s functionality. Allowing first-party digital PlayStation titles to be streamed without first downloading them to a home console would be a logical next step.

Released worldwide in 2023, PlayStation Portal is a handheld built around Remote Play. It isn’t the long-awaited successor to PlayStation Vita, but it performs its intended role well. This does not rule out a dedicated handheld project at Sony. Rumor has it a device is in development that could run PlayStation 5 games natively or via a small patch. Microsoft reportedly explored a handheld concept too, though earlier reports say those plans were shelved.

One question remains: why didn’t Sony ship PlayStation Portal with cloud game streaming from day one? It would have made a lot of sense.
