The director of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has opened up about why Sandfall Interactive has no intention of scaling up its next game. Beyond technical considerations, there is also a very personal reason behind the decision.
One of the recurring questions among players who enjoyed Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is what direction Sandfall Interactive will take with its next project. The French studio’s upcoming game will not face the same budgetary limitations that defined its debut title, meaning the team could theoretically expand and radically rethink its creative scope. However, that idea has not even seriously crossed their minds. In a recent interview, Guillaume Broche, the game’s director and the studio’s founder, explained that the prospect of going bigger is simply not very appealing to him, and that, beyond the previously mentioned reasons, he also has a straightforward personal motivation for keeping the team small.
The Creator of Expedition 33 Wants to Keep Making Games
The topic came up when Edge magazine asked Broche, in an interview published in its newsletter, whether he planned to pursue a larger production for his next game. His answer was immediate. He argued that creative limitations are actually beneficial, as they are often the best way to push yourself to deliver your strongest work. In that sense, his comments followed the same line he had taken in earlier conversations, where he highlighted factors such as agility and a handcrafted approach to development. Working with a small team inevitably reduces the scope of a project, but it also brings advantages, including better coordination and tighter collaboration.
This time, however, the conversation quickly shifted to a more personal level. Broche explained that even though the studio now has significantly more financial freedom, expanding the team is not particularly tempting. At present, even the management team remains directly involved in development, and that is something he does not want to give up. As he put it, they enjoy creating games far more than managing people, and they want to keep doing exactly that. The past five years, he said, have been some of the best of his life, and his goal is simply to be that happy again. In the end, the reasoning feels perfectly natural. If something works and brings satisfaction, why change it?
That said, there is still a long wait ahead before players see the next game from the creators of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Even if the project remains on a similar scale to Sandfall Interactive’s debut title, development will take time. While building a game naturally takes longer when a studio is also laying its foundations, it is reasonable to expect a relatively similar timeframe for what comes next, assuming everything goes smoothly.
