Cyberpunk 2077: CD Projekt RED Has Removed a Paid VR Mod!

Perhaps the Polish developers disapproved of someone trying to profit from a VR mod created for the game.

In February 2022, renowned virtual reality modder Luke Ross released a Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod. However, it was removed at the request of the game’s developer, CD Projekt RED (CDPR), under the DMCA. The mod enhanced the experience by allowing players to enjoy Night City through VR headsets. It’s unclear why CDPR took action now. Perhaps they were unaware of the mod until someone recently brought it to their attention.

The Polish developers are not working on an official VR mode. Ross clarified this after discussing the matter with CDPR’s vice president of business development and legal affairs. This is in contrast to a few years ago when Take-Two removed the Red Dead Redemption 2 VR mods for Grand Theft Auto V and Mafia Definitive Edition. At that time, Ross was unable to contact anyone at Take-Two.

On Patreon, the VR modder bitterly complained about corporate double standards and reactions. Only the bottom line matters, and players can go to hell. However, the audience was not very surprised. The company cannot allow others to profit from its intellectual property without a license. This situation could have been avoided if Ross had simply released the mod for free and asked for donations on Patreon afterward.

CDPR has no problem with free mods, as evidenced by its support for the modding communities of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. A few years ago, they even released a complete mod toolkit (REDkit) for The Witcher 3, encouraging more modders to experiment with the game. In terms of mod downloads, Cyberpunk 2077 is the fastest-growing game on Nexus Mods, recently surpassing Fallout: New Vegas and trailing only the base and Special Edition versions of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4.

However, the Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod was behind a paywall, resulting in legal action. The modder isn’t giving up, though. In fact, he just released a new VR mod for Baldur’s Gate 3. This was a challenging task because the game uses an isometric-style camera, albeit in full 3D, and the modder has not yet converted it to virtual reality. Unfortunately, this mod is also behind a paywall, and the license holder, Wizards of the Coast, may still take action against it.
