The franchise looks like it’s barely standing, but Square Enix is betting on a miracle game that finally delivers what Life is Strange fans have been dreaming of. Life is Strange Reunion has just been unveiled with a trailer, a release date, and multiple special editions.
One of the reasons the first Life is Strange hit so hard is because it gave us a truly unforgettable moment – the kind that sticks with you and refuses to fade. I still remember that defining choice like it happened yesterday, and I’ll admit it: it was brutal – I’m sure it wasn’t easy for you either. That’s exactly why the newly announced Life is Strange: Reunion for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 feels like such a big deal for fans of this narrative adventure series. For the first time in more than a decade, Max Caulfield and Chloe Price are finally back in the same game. And no, it doesn’t magically delete the painful decisions you made years ago. The explanation for this seemingly impossible reunion is Life is Strange: Double Exposure.
In that adventure – which disappointed a lot of players and seemingly even Square Enix – Max gained the ability to move between two realities. From this point forward, consider this a spoiler zone for the ending of the original Life is Strange, and especially the events of Double Exposure. Like I said, Max can jump between two parallel timelines, and that ultimately leads to both realities colliding into one. That’s where Chloe enters the story, “haunted by nightmares of a past she never lived.” No matter what you picked back then, Reunion will acknowledge it, promising a customizable story with scenes that can shift dramatically – one of the sequel’s biggest selling points, as Deck Nine Games aims to close the book on both characters’ arcs. But it wouldn’t be a Life is Strange game without a mystery at the center, and this time the tragedy is a devastating fire at Caledon University, where Max now works as a photography professor.
The Life is Strange Star Duo Returns
The Reunion reveal is loaded with major details. For the first time in Life is Strange history, we’ll actually be able to play as both Max and Chloe. Max also gets back her rewind power, something we haven’t properly seen since the original, while Chloe brings a different kind of “superpower” – less flashy, but just as effective: pure, unapologetic insolence. “I love that Chloe’s power is basically just being Chloe, no filter” jokes one of the voice actresses behind the protagonists. “But keep in mind: insolence changes how people react to her, and that will have consequences for the investigation,” they add.
In practice, everything you do and everything you say influences the direction of the story, with gameplay situations that can change a lot depending on your choices. Deck Nine insists that no one at Caledon is truly safe, and we’ll be forced into difficult, high-stakes decisions all over again. They’ve also showcased some intriguing puzzles and gameplay sequences, where time control is clearly the headline mechanic. The developers say the system has been refined to feel smoother and more intuitive, including tense set-pieces where you’ll need to constantly rewind events to solve time-sensitive challenges (like racing against a countdown to an explosion).
Whatever You Chose Back Then, Reunion Will Account for It – And Offer a Tailor-Made Story
After how many people reacted to Double Exposure, it’s easy to understand the skepticism around this project – but if you loved the original game, it’s almost impossible not to get excited about Max and Chloe sharing the spotlight again, chasing a new mystery that even dips into satanic cult territory. A single scene can radically transform depending on how you play and which decisions you make, including the option to spark a romance.
Bottom line: Deck Nine Games clearly heard the backlash aimed at their previous installment. If this really is, as they claim, “the epic conclusion to Max and Chloe’s saga,” then it’s a game they simply can’t afford to mess up. Especially after the sales dip of the franchise’s most recent entries. Can they actually meet expectations? Thankfully, we won’t have to wait long to find out: Life is Strange: Reunion launches on March 26 for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PS5. And it will come in multiple special editions.
