Bungie’s next game may demonstrate how Sony’s mid-generation console update can deliver enhanced performance.
In just over a month, Bungie will release Marathon, an extraction shooter that found itself at the center of controversy and was delayed due to disappointing early demos. The release of the studio’s first new IP since Destiny in 2014 will be noteworthy, even for PlayStation 5 Pro owners who aren’t fans of the team that created the iconic Halo during the original Xbox era. Marathon will make interesting use of the system’s power.
The game’s official PlayStation website landing page confirms that the extraction shooter will be PlayStation 5 Pro Enhanced. The console’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology combines 5K internal rendering with a clean, stable 4K image. This ensures that your runner’s (or character’s) field of view remains sharp, even during intense action. Barring any unexpected glitches, Marathon will be the first competitive title on the PlayStation 5 Pro Enhanced to render internally at 5K resolution (5120 x 2880). While this isn’t surprising, given Sony‘s console performance and the game’s low demands, it would have made more sense to emphasize that PSSR provides 4K resolution output with 120 FPS support. This is more advantageous for a shooter game than the sharpest image quality.
Hopefully, the system will continue to provide a high-frame-rate gaming experience perfectly suited to a game like Marathon. This will likely be achieved with the new version of PSSR, rumored to be available in March (as we wrote earlier in the news). This version, commonly known as PSSR 2.0, is said to significantly increase performance, which would help a game rendered at a high internal resolution achieve a higher frame rate.
It might be a mistake, but we don’t think it’s a typo.
