You can now gather every NPC in Baldur’s Gate 3 as if the RPG had adopted Pokémon-style mechanics. The latest mod allows you to “capture” even hostile characters. An item that has existed in the game since launch forms the basis of a system that lets you acquire virtually every character, even if they won’t remain loyal to you.
Yes, Baldur’s Gate 3 has found its way back into the spotlight once again. The 2023 Game of the Year continues to receive new additions and discoveries from its community, even now that Swen Vincke and Larian Studios have shifted their focus to Divinity. In this case, mechanics from other games have effectively been “mixed” into the RPG, all thanks to one of its most basic items: Iron Flasks. A user has created a mod that turns them into Poké Balls, allowing players to capture any NPC and later release them… or not.
Collect Every NPC in Baldur’s Gate 3
The mod, available on Nexusmods, is called BALL (short for Bindong Arcane Lattice Lock), and it works as follows. As Baldur’s Gate 3 players already know, Iron Flasks are among the most useful yet dangerous items in the game. They can trap an NPC, but this mod changes how they function. Now, players can throw them at any NPC to seal them inside the flask and “store” them until they decide to release them.
However, if the capture attempt fails, the targeted NPC will immediately engage in combat, as expected. To support this system, the mod even includes a spell that references the Game Freak slogan, “Gotta Catch ‘Em All.” As long as players have an Iron Flask in their inventory and available space, they can use it to capture an NPC. Afterward, they can throw the specific flask containing their “Pokémon” – which must be identified if several are carried – to a location to make that character appear.
It is important to note that if the released NPC was hostile before capture, they will remain hostile afterward. In some situations, if used against wild creatures or targets not aligned with them, they may even turn on the player first before redirecting their aggression. It is not the most revolutionary mod ever made, but it is certainly an amusing and creative one.
Even so, the mod’s author included a clear warning in the notes: players are strongly advised not to use these mechanics on key story characters, NPCs required for quests, or figures tied to events that have later consequences. Doing so could “break” the game and prevent further progression. Still, the idea of capturing Elminster just to carry him around in a flask, or to challenge him to a duel, is hard not to imagine.
