Yang Binglin, better known as Game Grandpa, has pulled off something that plenty of much younger streamers would not even attempt. The 90-year-old veteran completed Resident Evil Requiem live, without guides, using only his own notes and hand-drawn maps.
Yang Binglin, better known online as Game Grandpa, did not just finish Resident Evil Requiem live on stream, he did it without relying on guides, forums, or ready-made solutions, which is something many players today would not even consider trying. At first glance, it may sound like just another charming gaming anecdote, but this is not just any streamer. According to Guinness World Records, he is the oldest male video game streamer in the world, and he celebrated his 90th birthday only a few months ago.
The gamer, who was born in December 1935, has become a genuine curiosity in the gaming scene, and not only because of his age. What makes his achievement stand out even more is the way he plays. While working through Resident Evil Requiem, he used a notebook, drew his own maps by hand, and took personal notes, which means he approached the game in a style that feels far closer to the 1990s than to the era of wikis, YouTube walkthroughs, and instant online answers.
Thirty-year-old habits that still work
This style is not some one-off eccentric habit either. Yang has said that he regularly documents strategies, ideas, and completion times, so his method goes far beyond what players have just seen with Resident Evil Requiem. His relationship with video games began in 1996, right after his retirement, and since then he has essentially turned that hobby into a lifestyle, one so distinctive that it earned him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Before retirement, Yang worked in research and engineering related to oil drilling, so it is not especially surprising that he later carried that same methodical way of thinking into gaming. And this is not even the first difficult title he has completed live. He has previously streamed games such as Black Myth: Wukong and Elden Ring, which makes it pretty clear that Game Grandpa is not the kind of player who backs away from a serious challenge.
Perhaps the most memorable part of the whole story, though, is the message he left at the end. After finishing the ninth Resident Evil, Yang summed up his experience in a very simple but powerful way: “Move forward step by step, even if you are afraid.” He also thanked his fans for their support and said that playing with them is much more enjoyable than playing alone. Fortunately, that is not where the story ends, because he also confirmed that he intends to keep playing Resident Evil as long as Capcom keeps releasing new entries, and he has already started another run of Requiem so he can explore it more thoroughly.
