Blizzard’s hero shooter has arrived on Nintendo’s new-generation hardware alongside the second season of Reign of Talon.
When Blizzard announced that it was dropping the number two from the title Overwatch 2 and returning to the simpler Overwatch name, it also confirmed that the long-running hero shooter would make its way to the Nintendo Switch 2 later this year. We now know exactly when: today. As of April 14, the game is available on Nintendo’s new hardware, launching at the same time as the second season of Reign of Talon. Blizzard detailed the release in a lengthy blog post, where it also outlined the season’s biggest additions. Among them is Sierra, a brand-new DPS hero and the first newly added character since Season 1, which launched with five heroes at once.
Post-match commendations are also returning with the start of the new season, and the season itself opens with Operation: Grand Mesa, a three-week event designed to deepen players’ knowledge of Sierra by unlocking pieces of her backstory through specific challenges. The Antarctic Peninsula map has also been reworked to create cleaner engagements, smoother team movement, and more meaningful flanking routes. On top of that, Ramattra, Pharah, Reaper, Soldier: 76, and Mercy are all receiving smaller ability tweaks, and naturally there is also a fresh batch of cosmetics to buy or unlock through the Battle Pass.
According to Blizzard, the Nintendo Switch 2 version offers improved visuals, better sound quality, and up to 60 FPS in both docked and handheld play, making it a noticeably better experience than the original Nintendo Switch edition. Blizzard describes it as a cleaner, sharper, and more portable version of Overwatch that still lets players team up with friends wherever they are.
That means the game has now finally reached every current-generation platform. It took a bit of time after the Switch 2 launched last June, but at least Microsoft-owned Blizzard followed through on its promise.
