Several Nintendo products will be affected by regulatory changes, but the original Switch family will pay the biggest price.
Nintendo has announced in an FAQ covering upcoming battery-related revisions that sales of Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED Model systems in Europe will end from mid-February 2027.
Production of the Switch family will continue through 2026, and the systems will remain widely available across Europe in the coming months. The original Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017, followed by Nintendo Switch Lite in 2019 and Nintendo Switch OLED Model in 2021.
The notice about ending sales is part of a broader announcement. It outlines upcoming battery-related revisions for several Nintendo products, primarily the Nintendo Switch 2 family, due to changing European regulations.
Starting this summer, Nintendo will introduce user-replaceable batteries in new European products that comply with European Union requirements. In several cases, the trade-off will be lower battery capacity or increased weight.
The neon red and neon blue Joy-Con controllers will not change in battery capacity or weight when the replaceable-battery versions arrive. Additional colors may follow later.
Nintendo Switch 2 will receive a new battery this fall, replacing the original 5220mAh unit with a 5172mAh battery. The console’s weight will rise from 401 grams to 411 grams, while its weight with Joy-Con 2 controllers attached will increase from 534 grams to 548 grams.
Joy-Con 2 controllers will also receive replaceable batteries. Their capacity will not change, but the left controller will increase from 66 grams to 68 grams and the right controller from 67 grams to 69 grams. The new versions are scheduled to arrive this winter.
A revised Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is also coming this winter. Its battery capacity will fall from 1070mAh to 897mAh, while its weight will decrease from 235 grams to 228 grams.
The Nintendo Switch N64 Controller will receive a revised version in early 2027. Its battery capacity will stay the same, while its weight will increase from 233 grams to 234 grams.
The GameCube controller will be updated around the same period. Its battery capacity will increase from 500mAh to 525mAh, while its weight will rise from 210 grams to 215 grams.
In some cases, batteries may therefore drain faster, but users will be able to replace them. The first Switch generation will still disappear from European store shelves, because Nintendo clearly does not consider it worthwhile to redesign the aging console family.
