Originally released on two consoles but not on PC, this fan-made port remedies Konami’s omission.
The game in question can truly be called forgotten. That game is Silent Hill: Downpour. It was the Silent Hill game developed in the West that offered a semi-open world and plenty of side quests. However, it was too preoccupied with retelling the story of Silent Hill 2 with a different villain. It wasn’t a disaster, but saying that it’s better than Silent Hill: Homecoming or the arcade game would be such a half-hearted compliment that it would be like whispering from across the street.
Still, those side quests were great. If you ignore the main plot, in which an escaped prisoner is haunted by manifestations of his guilt, then you can explore a town full of ghost stories and mysteries. I especially liked the mission where you follow color-coded ribbons to find out what happened to a missing girl. It reminded me that Silent Hill can be truly eerie. But the game is difficult to run. Silent Hill: Downpour was only released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. At best, we can emulate it using RPCS3, or we can wait for a native PC port. And that’s exactly what’s in the works!
Indie_RU’s port is more than just a way to play Silent Hill: Downpour on PC with an unlimited frame rate and higher resolutions, though that alone is always a joy. The port also restores cut content, meaning you can fight with additional weapons, such as the Bogeyman’s hammer. Deleted cutscenes, notes, dialogue, and entire side quests also make a return. The port also restores a boss battle featured in an early trailer, in which you must fight the Monocle Man. He only had a cameo role in the final game.
We can expect the finished product around September or October, which is also when Silent Hill: Townfall, the Scottish entry in the series from Screen Burn Interactive, is expected to be released.
