MOVIE NEWS – Chris Anne Affleck, the mother of Ben and Casey Affleck, has died at 83 after living with pancreatic cancer for several months.
Ben Affleck and his family are mourning a profound loss. Although the actor’s mother passed away in early June, the news only became public weeks later. The circumstances make the tragedy even more personal: Chris Anne Affleck spent her final hours at her son’s Los Angeles residence.
She died on June 2, 2026, aged 83. Her death certificate lists cardiopulmonary arrest as the immediate cause, following pancreatic adenocarcinoma that had affected her for months. Doctors diagnosed the cancer in December 2025 and estimated that she had roughly six months left.
The loss is also being felt by Ben’s younger brother, Casey Affleck, and the rest of the family. Public records indicate that Chris was staying at Ben’s home when she died, underscoring how close she remained to her sons during the hardest period of her life.
She spent her final days close to Ben Affleck
One source of comfort for the family is that Chris managed to fulfill an important wish. After receiving her diagnosis, she hoped to live long enough to see her grandson Atticus graduate from high school. She attended the ceremony on May 31 and celebrated with her loved ones; two days later, she died peacefully in her sleep.
Ben and his mother were frequently seen together over the years, and their bond was apparent during public appearances. One of their best-known shared moments came in 1998, when Ben Affleck and Matt Damon arrived at the Academy Awards with their mothers and thanked them after winning the Oscar for the screenplay of Good Will Hunting.
A teacher and civil-rights activist with a lasting legacy
Chris Anne Affleck’s life extended far beyond being the mother of two Oscar-winning actors. Born in New York in 1942, she graduated from Harvard’s Radcliffe College and taught in public schools for 35 years. She also ran literacy programs in Mississippi and was remembered for treating every student with equal respect, regardless of background or social circumstances.
Political and social causes remained central to her throughout her life. She worked on Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, collaborated with the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine, and helped establish the Sustainable Cape initiative in Massachusetts. Along with her two sons, she is survived by five grandchildren: Indiana, Violet, Atticus, Fin and Sam.
The family also endured a difficult legacy
Chris remained a steady presence for Ben when the actor struggled with alcohol addiction. Affleck has now been sober for years, but he previously entered treatment several times and has spoken candidly about substance abuse running through generations of his family.
His father, Timothy Affleck, dealt with severe alcoholism for many years. Ben has recalled how painful it was as a child to watch his father drink throughout the day. His parents ultimately divorced, and although Timothy later stopped drinking, those experiences left a lasting mark on the family.
Ben Affleck has also discussed living with depression and anxiety since he was young. He has said that breaking inherited patterns is exceptionally difficult, which is why maintaining sobriety and emotional stability has required sustained, deliberate work. Losing his mother therefore means losing someone who had supported him throughout his entire life.
