Sony’s digital store is also drawing attention to the fact that, in just over a year and a half, the company will be moving into the digital future.

PlayStation is continuing to take small steps towards its final exit from the physical disc market. Following the appearance of a label confirming this decision on the packaging of the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition (which includes a Blu-ray drive), the gaming giant posted similar information on its website. The official PlayStation Direct Store now displays a message informing new buyers of the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition about this change.

The official PlayStation Direct Store sells all consoles, accessories and games, enabling consumers to find all PlayStation products in one place in various countries. However, if you try to purchase a PlayStation 5 Standard Edition console from the website, a statement now appears. Sony informs customers that it will stop supporting discs in January 2028. The message also emphasises that games released before this date will continue to support the disc format. The same message has also been posted on the PlayStation 5 disc drive accessory page. “From January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase in digital format only,” the message reads.

Since Sony has previously stated that it will implement this decision cautiously, it appears that the announcements in various places reflect this approach. The company is gradually informing the general public about its shift away from discs, and more drastic measures can be expected as January 2028 approaches. It will therefore be interesting to see whether these small steps will accelerate the shift towards digital games further.

A large portion of the industry’s revenue now comes from digital distribution, so these messages may encourage more consumers to choose digital consoles and games. No matter how much gamers protest, it seems that nothing will change Sony’s plans.
