TECH NEWS – It may replace the GB205 GPU with a more powerful one (remember, the lower the last digit, the more powerful it is!).

Nvidia has used different chips in its existing graphics cards before, and we’ve seen it start using larger chips in some of its RTX 5000 series cards. MSI has released a new version of the RTX 5060. Unlike standard RTX 5060 models, which use the GB206 chip, some newer RTX 5060 cards have switched to the GB205 chip. The GB205 is larger, but Nvidia reduced its performance to achieve the same specifications.

Now, another rumor suggests that Nvidia will also switch to a new chip for some RTX 5070 GPUs. On Twitter, @hongxing2020 reported that a new version of the RTX 5070 will soon be released, using the GB203 GPU chip instead of the GB205. The GB203 chip has been used exclusively in the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080 thus far, measuring 378 mm². It is nearly 43% larger than the 263 mm² GB205 chip. For the GB203 to meet the RTX 5070 model’s GB205 specifications, Nvidia would need to significantly reduce the chip’s performance. To accomplish this, Nvidia would need to disable nearly 42.8% of the CUDA cores to reach 6,144 shaders since the full GB203 contains 10,752 CUDA cores.

Nvidia would also need to disable two of the eight memory channels to achieve a 192-bit bus and make room for the 12 GB GDDR7 memory configuration. The leaker did not specify the reason for this change, but we know that Nvidia sometimes repurposes larger chips that do not meet the requirements for its high-end GPUs and uses them in lower-end hardware. In this case, the GB203 chips that did not meet the requirements for the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080 will end up in some RTX 5070 cards.

The insider also mentioned that Nvidia is releasing a new GPU driver today, which could signal early support for the new version, though this wasn’t mentioned in the tweet.
