PlayStation has walked away from Hideo Kojima’s upcoming espionage game PHYSINT, and Xbox has stepped in to keep the project alive. The move stunned more than ordinary players: former Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida needed only 17 characters and an emoji on X to make it clear how unexpected he found the decision.
For a long time, PHYSINT looked like one of PlayStation’s most intriguing long-term projects. Hideo Kojima has described it as a spiritual successor to the kind of espionage action associated with Metal Gear, even as Kojima Productions continues developing OD in partnership with Xbox. That made Sony’s decision to end its involvement particularly surprising. The game itself is not disappearing, however, because Microsoft has now stepped in to finance and publish the project.
Shuhei Yoshida was among those caught off guard. The 62-year-old executive spent more than a decade leading Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios before eventually moving into a role focused on PlayStation’s independent developers. Since leaving the company, he has remained an outspoken figure who is perfectly willing to question Sony’s current direction when he disagrees with it. This time he did not need a lengthy explanation: his extremely short X reaction made his surprise obvious.
Yoshida has been candid about PlayStation’s strategy before. He previously joked that one reason he was removed from his old leadership position was his refusal to simply follow Jim Ryan’s direction, particularly when Sony was pushing more aggressively toward live-service games. That does not mean he automatically opposes everything the company does: when discussing PC releases, for example, he argued that launching major PlayStation AAA games on PC on day one would weaken the exclusives that help give the console its identity. Sony’s decision to abandon PHYSINT, though, appears to have genuinely surprised him.
The situation is especially striking because Kojima’s history with PlayStation stretches back decades. Metal Gear Solid became one of the original PlayStation’s defining releases, while Sony later played an important role in bringing Death Stranding to life. PHYSINT originally emerged from that long relationship and was publicly unveiled during a PlayStation State of Play. Now, in a remarkable reversal, the project will continue under the publisher that remains Sony’s biggest traditional console rival.
Xbox Has Stepped In to Keep PHYSINT Alive
According to Kojima, the change had actually been developing behind the scenes for months. He explained on X that PlayStation Studios unexpectedly informed Kojima Productions in mid-June that it intended to cancel the PHYSINT project. Because the game is important both to Kojima personally and to his studio, the team then spent roughly three months searching for another partner. That search ultimately led back to Xbox, where Kojima Productions already had an established relationship through OD.
The new arrangement therefore does more than simply move PHYSINT from one publisher to another. It substantially deepens the existing relationship between Kojima Productions and Microsoft, with both OD and PHYSINT now tied to Xbox. The partnership is also expected to extend beyond video games into film and television, an especially notable detail for a project Kojima has repeatedly positioned near the boundary between interactive entertainment and cinema.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life, adding that Xbox is honored Kojima chose the company as the partner for PHYSINT. She described his determination to challenge conventions as exactly the kind of creativity Xbox wants to support. Sony, meanwhile, has said it continues to admire Hideo Kojima’s vision and characterized the decision to step away from the game as a difficult one.
Several major questions remain unresolved. PHYSINT had been associated with Sony’s Decima Engine, leaving uncertainty over whether Kojima Productions can continue using that technology under the new arrangement or will need to move to another engine. The change could also affect platforms, production arrangements, and other aspects of the project’s development. What is now clear, however, is that the game survived a period when its future was far less certain.
Sony’s decision could ultimately become one of the stranger business turns of this console generation. PlayStation walked away from an espionage project by a creator whose work has been closely associated with the brand for decades, while Xbox has now added that project to an existing Kojima partnership. Considering that PHYSINT was originally presented as a major future PlayStation collaboration, Yoshida’s tiny reaction arguably captured the situation better than a lengthy corporate statement ever could.
