Ace Combat 8 Is Leaving the Game Behind Before Launch – A Live-Action Prequel Series Will Set Up Wings of Theve

Bandai Namco is doing far more than releasing another trailer ahead of Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve on October 2. Project Aces has produced an entire live-action prequel titled Hour Zero, featuring several familiar film and television actors, with Kazutoki Kono and his team overseeing the production from the earliest script drafts all the way through filming.

Bandai Namco clearly wants the arrival of Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve to feel bigger than a conventional game launch. The publisher recently used Gamescom to unveil the title’s expanded online mode, and now it has revealed a promotional project that even longtime fans of the series may not have expected. Rather than producing a simple commercial or cinematic trailer, Project Aces has helped create a separate live-action miniseries directly connected to the new game’s story. The idea is to bring players into the world of Wings of Theve before they climb into their own fighter jets on October 2.

Titled Hour Zero, the production serves as a prequel to Ace Combat 8 and takes place within the same universe as the game. That means the setting is not the Earth we know, but Strangereal, the alternate world that has hosted the political conflicts, wars, and aerial battles of the Ace Combat franchise. The roughly one-minute teaser points toward a tense and dramatic wartime story, mixing character-driven live-action scenes with the aerial combat that defines the series.

Project Aces Is Taking Its Most Ambitious Promotional Flight Yet

The cast alone suggests Bandai Namco is treating this as more than a quickly assembled promotional short. Josh Holloway, known for Lost and Yellowstone, is part of the project alongside T. J. Thyne from Bones, Tamlyn Tomita of The Karate Kid Part III and Cobra Kai, and former Superman Returns star Brandon Routh. Few specific story details have been revealed so far, but the first footage points toward a high-tension war drama in which individual characters are caught up in the larger military events unfolding across Strangereal.

The series begins with its first episode on September 15, followed by additional releases on September 17, September 23, and September 29. According to IGN, the production consists of three episodes and an epilogue, with individual installments running between roughly six and eleven minutes. That puts the complete live-action story at approximately 36 to 44 minutes of footage expanding the Strangereal universe beyond the games themselves. Nothing quite like this has been attempted as a dedicated Ace Combat production before.

Fan reaction to the announcement has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Comments under the teaser include plenty of viewers admitting they never expected the franchise to receive this kind of live-action treatment, while a familiar joke has resurfaced as well: for years, some fans have described Top Gun: Maverick as the unofficial live-action Ace Combat movie. Hour Zero changes that comparison considerably, because this time the production is actually set in the franchise’s universe and has been created with direct involvement from the people responsible for the games.

Project Aces leader Kazutoki Kono explains at the end of the teaser that his team and Bandai Namco did not simply hand the property to an outside film crew and wait for the finished result. The developers supervised the production from the earliest stages of the screenplay through the filming itself. That involvement matters because Hour Zero is being presented not as loosely connected marketing material, but as an actual prequel designed to fit the world and narrative of Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve.

Bandai Namco has previously experimented with extending some of its gaming properties into television. Amazon’s Secret Level anthology included episodes inspired by PAC-MAN and Armored Core, with the latter featuring Keanu Reeves as an augmented human piloting a mech. Hour Zero is fundamentally different, however. It is not one chapter of a wider anthology, but a standalone production created exclusively around Ace Combat and specifically designed to support the launch of its next major installment.

The release schedule also means the series will lead directly into the game. Its final installment arrives on September 29, while Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches on October 2, leaving only a few days between the conclusion of the live-action prequel and the beginning of the player’s own campaign. Anyone who wants the full story before takeoff should therefore keep an eye on Bandai Namco’s official YouTube channels, where the episodes will be released.
