Although the Platinum Trophy for S-Game’s title can be earned in a single playthrough, that’s not the essence of Phantom Blade Zero.
Phantom Blade Zero is one of several high-profile games scheduled for release in October. This was done to avoid coming out too close to the release of Grand Theft Auto VI. The action game, developed by S-Game, was originally set to launch on September 9 for the PlayStation 5 and PC. Nevertheless, the game’s director, Soulframe Liang, revealed that a single playthrough on any difficulty level will earn players the platinum trophy. However, New Game+ and the Sixty-Six Days difficulty mode reveal the true essence of the experience.
This type of roguelike gameplay was considered excessive. While the tension stemming from the possibility of losing over 20 hours of progress would have made for excellent streaming content, it would also have caused frustration. Therefore, S-Game decided to adopt a more traditional difficulty system and reserve the Sixty-Six Days mode exclusively for the New Game+ mode.

“I never thought that my favorite modes to play in Phantom Blade Zero would be the easiest ‘Wayfarer’ mode and the most hardcore ‘Sixty-Six Days’ mode. When I first conceived of Phantom Blade Zero in 2018, I envisioned the entire game as an unselectable, super-high difficulty with players meeting their end after sixty-six deaths. With each restart, due to improvement in the player’s skills, they may get closer to the game’s ending than last time. The save file for ‘Sixty-Six Days’ is separate from those of the other difficulties. Once you touch the bell, it will autosave, and there is no manual save. This process faithfully records all your mistakes and frustrations, and you cannot reload data before your errors—just like in life. If you use up all the days, you will reach a regrettable ending in the martial world. This ending also has a short animation. After it plays, the data for this session will become history forever. Then, it will ask if you want to start over,” Soulframe said in a Bilibili post.
Phantom Blade Zero is set to release on October 29 for the PlayStation 5 and PC.
