Dragon Age: The Veilguard Receives a Prequel Story—But It Won’t Be a Game! [VIDEO]

BioWare is so serious about making Dragon Age 4 that it’s treating it as a transmedia, in that the story that precedes the events of the game will be presented in a different format.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard remains the only RPG title on the block, as we’ve already reported that Avowed, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 have all moved their release dates to 2025. And BioWare and Electronic Arts want to take full advantage of this, so they’ve announced Dragon Age: Vows & Vengeance, which will be an audio drama in podcast format. So think of it like something you’d hear on BBC Radio 4.

The story of Vows & Vengeance is about a retired thief. He wants to find love, and in seven of the eight episodes there will be a companion who is a guest star from The Veilguard. In the second episode, the dwarf scout Harding from Dragon Age: Inquisition will certainly fill this role. Based on the teaser embedded below, Solas and Varric are likely to make appearances, so maybe one of them could take over Harding’s role in a later episode, but that’s just a guess.

So BioWare is fully behind the story of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. This podcast joins Tevinter Nights and The Missing (the former a short story anthology, the latter a comic), and there’s also the Netfix series, which will certainly have an impact on the story. Before that, there was Dragon Age: Redemption, a web series starring and created by Felicia Day, which was tied into a pretty cool Dragon Age 2 supplement. So the studio has no shortage of experience in this area, and it’s impressive.

For example, Dragon Age: Vows & Vengeance will debut on Spotify and YouTube on August 29, while Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC on October 31.
