History may not be repeating itself in this case, as the Big N’s plans may have changed behind the scenes.

The Nintendo Switch was announced in October 2016, and the hybrid console has been available since March 2017, becoming one of the best-selling platforms, with perhaps enough left in it to challenge the top-selling PlayStation 2. However, Nintendo has yet to officially announce much about its successor, but the Japanese company could soon make up for that shortfall.

Christopher Dring, editor of Gamesindustry, posted on Twitter that the industry birds are chirping that something will happen in September regarding the next platform of the big N. There may not be much chance of a full reveal, but a formal announcement could happen so the company can announce what the platform will be called. (Hopefully they won’t follow the Wii’s lead, because calling it Switch U wouldn’t be very good. Super Switch?)

But don’t get your hopes up that Nintendo’s next-generation hardware will be released anytime soon. Rumor has it that the Switch 2 (for lack of a better name, that’s what we called it) will miss the current fiscal year and won’t hit shelves until the end of March, meaning the early 2025 launch could be canceled and the platform will only be available later, in the spring of 2025, because Nintendo doesn’t want the console to be out of stock.

We don’t know much about the console, but there have been plenty of rumors: it could have the same format as the Switch, it could use a magnetic Joy-Con mechanism, it could have correct beam tracking performance thanks to Nvidia’s more advanced technology, it could have retroactive support, but all of this doesn’t answer the important question for many: how much will the Switch 2 be available for?

So far, all the big N has officially said about the successor to the Nintendo Switch is that it will be unveiled in the current fiscal year, so we’ll definitely see it by the end of March.
