Sony Continues to Prepare to Shut Down Game Disc Manufacturing!

The company also provided an update on PlayStation 5 sales, despite Sony’s lack of attention to the issue over the past month.

During the first-quarter fiscal-year earnings call, Tao Lin, the Chief Financial Officer of Sony Group Corporation, addressed the recent announcement that Sony Interactive Entertainment will stop producing physical PlayStation game discs in January 2028. Lin stated that there are numerous reasons behind the decision and that, despite differing opinions and strong stances, the plan is moving forward cautiously. Here is the quote:

“We announced that, starting in January 2028, we will no longer manufacture discs—one and a half years from now. There are various reasons we made this decision, the biggest being the overall progress of digitalization of content—that’s the big factor. It’s not just PlayStation; digitalization is progressing for all kinds of content. After much thought and consideration, we came to this conclusion and will move forward with it cautiously. We have received various opinions on this decision—people have strong views—and we understand that the community has expressed those views to us. Games are loved by many. They’re a form of entertainment that people love, and they’re often connected to fond memories. We understand those emotions. We want to take that into consideration. In the future digital ecosystem, we would like to continue exploring how to engage gamers. Thank you very much,” said Tao.

In its financial results for the three months ending June 30, 2026, Sony announced that it had shipped 95.3 million PlayStation 5 consoles to retailers worldwide. A total of 1.6 million PlayStation 5 units were shipped during the three months ending June 30, 2026, which is 0.9 million fewer than in the same period of the previous fiscal year. This is clearly the result of the price increase.

As of June 30, the number of monthly active users on the PlayStation Network was 125 million, an increase of two million compared with a year earlier. A total of 66.1 million copies of PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 games were sold this quarter, an increase of 0.2 million compared with the same period last year. Of these, 6 million were first-party titles, 0.19 million fewer than last year. Digital sales via the PlayStation Store accounted for 82% of total software sales, a 1% decrease from last year.
