Frostpunk 2 Reveals Exciting New Feature: Multiple Colonies in the Game [VIDEO]

The final developer diary for Frostpunk 2, released just before the game’s official launch, has unveiled a significant new feature: the introduction of multiple colonies. This addition allows players to establish larger, self-sufficient colonies with their own economies, logistics, and populations, while also focusing on expanding smaller colonies across the frostland.

Eight entries have been shared in the Frostpunk 2 developer diaries, titled City Unbound. The last entry, released today, provides an in-depth look at how cities and colonies will function in the game. The video, which is just under three minutes long, offers detailed insights into what players can expect when managing multiple colonies and the distinctions between them.

Managing several colonies will require careful balancing, as survival will be more challenging than ever in Frostpunk 2. Game Directors Lukasz Kuszcyk and Jakub Stokalski explain in the new developer diary: “To establish a colony, players must relocate part of the population from the central city. While New London retains control—no independent delegates and voting in the colonies—each outpost requires careful management.”

To create a new colony, players need to send a group of settlers from the main city and gradually dispatch additional teams to keep them safe. The video also confirms that colonies won’t have separate Council Halls, so social issues will remain centralized in the main city.

Although managing multiple cities might seem daunting, each colony can specialize in specific productions. This specialization allows resources to flow back to the main city and other colonies as needed, aiding their development. However, if the main city fails, it’s game over—even if the external colonies are flourishing, as they remain heavily dependent on the city. As the game progresses, players will also be able to trade resources using trade routes and Skyways with advanced production capabilities.

Frostpunk 2 is set to release on PC on September 20, with availability on PC Game Pass from day one. A console release will follow at a later date. Those who purchase the Digital Deluxe edition will receive three yet-to-be-announced DLCs, an in-game item, and 72-hour early access to the game.
