MOVIE NEWS – Ewan McGregor says his Obi-Wan Kenobi still has “few stories to tell”…

Ewan McGregor thinks Obi-Wan Kenobi has more to tell. McGregor first joined the Star Wars franchise in 1999’s Phantom Menace, which opened the prequel trilogy, as the young version of Kenobi, taking over the role played by Alec Guinness in the original trilogy. He also played his role in the 2002 film Attack of the Clones and the 2005 film Revenge of the Sith. In 2022, 17 years after he last played the character, McGregor returned in the Disney+ spinoff series Obi-Wan Kenobi.

McGregor is finally set to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and sat down to talk with Variety about his career. During the interview, he said that he would like to play Obi-Wan Kenobi once more after the Disney+ series. While some may think that the Jedi Master’s story is over, as the character was forced to hide from the Empire before the events of the first Star Wars, the actor sees the franchise as having plenty more stories to tell, filling in the gap between the spinoff and Obi-Wan saving Luke Skywalker from the Tusken Raiders. McGregor said:

“I really do hope we get a chance to do another one.”

“Between where we ended off in the series and when Alec Guinness comes on screen with Luke Skywalker, I think there’s another few stories to tell in there.”

Will there be an Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2?

Although Obi-Wan Kenobi aired as a Disney+ series, it was initially slated to be a feature film before the failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story led Lucasfilm to take a new approach to the Star Wars franchise. Kenobi was planned as a film trilogy, so knowing that, the creators could tell several stories after the events of the series’ first season. The Star Wars comics have delved into Obi-Wan’s life on Tattooine, and since the final episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi sees the famous Jedi meet the Force-spirit of his master, Qui-Gon Jinn, it could lead to an exciting new story. A new Obi-Wan Kenobi series featuring Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn would be an exciting link for fans.

Still, an Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 seems a bit unlikely. Disney and Lucasfilm are reportedly pulling back from the Star Wars TV series. They’ve already canceled Acolyte and it looks like The Mandalorian season 4 has been scrapped in favor of a big budget feature film, The Mandalorian and Grogu. The production schedule also looks slim: after Skeleton Crew in late December 2024, it looks like the only Disney+ Star Wars series in the works for 2025 will be Andor season 2. Ahsoka season 2 is not expected until 2026. That is, in the same year when The Mandalorian movie is released.

Now it looks like Lucasfilm has turned the boat around. Moving away from the Star Wars series, Disney+ brings the franchise back to the big screen. In addition to The Mandalorian & Grogu, another Star Wars film is also being planned, which will combine several parts of the live-action Disney+ series in a crossover film. Director James Mangold is working on the very first film focusing on the Jedi. And Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is directing a new film starring Daisy Ridley’s Rey. Ewan McGregor could even play the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi again in a Star Wars movie. Thus, his story would form a symbolic circle from the film to the Disney+ series to the film.
