Essential Lord of the Rings Character Could Be Recasted for the Gollum Movie?! [VIDEO]

MOVIE NEWS – The Lord of the Rings star also explained why it is not certain that he will return…

Two Lord of the Rings prequels are in the works, and with their development comes a cinematic change that has divided fans. We’ve known for a while that a prequel film was in the works, but we didn’t realize that there would actually be two films. (And as we know Peter Jackson, if he says there will be two movies, there’s a good chance we’ll get a trilogy…)

In addition, the news that Legolas will be played by someone else has angered fans, who can only imagine Orlando Bloom in the role.

Several roles may also be recast, as an original Lord of the Rings actor explained.

Fans speculated that Sir Ian McKellen would reprise his role as Gandalf. However, for McKellen, the matter is not so straightforward.

In an interview with This Morning, McKellen said: “Well, all I know is they called me up and said these films were going to happen. They’re mainly going to be about Gollum.” (Before this he noted that two films are being made…)

“Andy Serkis who played Gollum is going to direct. And there will be a script arriving sometime in the new year – that’s next year. Then I’ll judge whether I want to go back.”

It’s not that the veteran actor doesn’t want to take on the role, but rather whether he will “live long enough” to finish the project. His words, not ours – we hope the 85-year-old actor has many more happy years ahead of him! Age jokes aside, McKellen would love to play Gandalf again if given the chance.

“I would: I would love to go back to New Zealand, number one. I also don’t like the idea of anybody else playing Gandalf,” he added.

Of course, while redistribution is unlikely in this case, it has already happened with a leading role, as McKellen was quick to point out. “Don’t forget there were two Dumbledores,” he teased when the This Morning host said they wouldn’t want anyone else to play the iconic wizard.

None of the above means that Gandalf will be played by someone else. The very fact that they have already contacted him shows that they want to see him in the role again. But that could certainly change if fate intervenes and McKellen can’t take it.

Let’s hope that doesn’t happen, as everyone would love to see him back as Gandalf…
