Alleged comments from the Space Marine 2 development team boss condemn games that “impose morals on gamers”…
The CEO of Saber Interactive, which developed Space Marine 2, Matthew Karch, condemned games that “impose morals on gamers” in a YouTube comment attributed to him.
The comment, which was posted on a little-used YouTube account bearing the name Matthew Karch, raised questions about whether the account belonged to Karch himself or an impersonator.
Space Marine 2 studio Saber Interactive declined to comment on the matter. However, according to a LinkedIn post, the comment was probably from Karch.
To another LinkedIn user who shared the original comment, Karch’s LinkedIn account replied: “Whoever wrote that seems pretty sharp,” seemingly confirming the comment’s legitimacy.
“I love your videos,” read the original YouTube comment posted in response to one of streamer Asmongold’s videos.
“When we signed the deal to make Space Marine 2, all I wanted was a throwback game. We had the chance to work on something which by its nature was ‘old school’. I can’t even understand many of the current games that we play these days. They are too complex and too much of an investment.”
“That is what we wanted to recapture. I hope that games like Space Marine 2 and Wukong are the start of a reversion to a time when games were simply about fun and immersion. I spent some time as Chief Operating Officer at Embracer and I saw games there that made me want to cry with their overblown attempts at messaging or imposing morals on gamers.”
Earlier this year, Embracer sold the Saber Interactive group, which housed studios such as 3D Realms and Slipgate Ironworks, for $247 million.
Another comment on the same video, purportedly from creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick’s account, read: “Everything you have to say about the story and characters resonates so strongly with our actual approach.”
“It’s great to hear you calling out the exact things that we intentionally focused on. It was four and a half years of intense work and passion and watching videos like this makes it all worth it.”
