Third-Person Mode Coming Soon to Halo Infinite! [VIDEO]

The game from 343 Industries (that didn’t end up being a killer app for Microsoft…) is about to get a surprising update.

Halo Infinite has been out for a few years now, and there’s not nearly as much interest in it today. However, the game is about to get a big update, and 343 Industries announced during the Forge roundtable at Halo World Championship 2024 that it will be getting a third-person mode. This comes as a surprise, as we’ve always been able to play (mostly) Master Chief’s stories in first-person.

John “Unyshek” Junyszek (Senior Community Manager) and Colin Cove (Senior Software Engineer at Skybox Labs) talked about the new third-person mode. It will definitely make its way into Firefight, but Cove said they have the ability to put it in PvP as well, and keep it under control in Forge. At the mode level, the external view will be supported, and the Forge controls will allow players to switch between first and third person at any time, and it can be done by everyone or just one player.

It is currently unclear if the multiplayer modes will only be available in third person, so those who play alone and only want to experience the story mode may be disappointed. There have been a lot of mods for Halo Infinite over the past few years, including an external view that is now official. We don’t see much chance of other Halo’s getting a similar expansion.

With this year’s Halo World Championship taking place right now, perhaps more announcements about the franchise could be coming. Master Chief’s luster has worn off in recent years: Twenty years ago, Halo 2 was one of the Xbox’s killer apps (and the PC port came much later…), and it became quite mainstream at the time because of the hype. Sony’s rival at the time was Guerrilla Games’ Killzone.

Hopefully the external view will be released in a sufficiently refined state in November.
