TECH NEWS – Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT), made a suggestion that virtually everyone reacted negatively to.
Even though generative AI has been around for quite a few years, it still seems to be working on its sales strategy. Altman, Elon Musk’s debate opponent, recently tweeted an interesting use case for ChatGPT that he had heard about. “A cool ChatGPT use case I heard about last night: connect your family calendars and explain your kids’ interests. Every morning on the way to school, it can make a podcast talking about one kid’s soccer game that afternoon, one kid’s upcoming birthday, some news, and so on.”
In other words, let’s entrust a productivity tool with keeping in touch with our relatives. Alex Hirsch, the creator of Gravity Falls, received more than 182,000 likes for the following response: “What if you just talked to your children?” The idea that our memories might be replaced by a large language model (LLM) is reminiscent of the 1950s experiment in which monkeys’ mothers were replaced with wire substitutes.

Reactions on Twitter were mostly negative. Comedian Gianmarco Soresi shared Altman’s post with a quote, adding: “Cool use case of a vibrator I heard last night: you can go in separate rooms and not have sex.” Kathryn Jezer-Morton’s quote reads: “Surreal how stupid this idea is.” Another comment from AM_Pines reads: “Children are supposed to be educated with Creedence Clearwater Revival during the morning drive, dammit, not some garbage generated by AI.”
Of course, this view may change if we believe, as Altman said, that we are currently experiencing the singularity and that AI has surpassed human intelligence. However, this claim and the idea that ChatGPT can help us communicate with our children and care for infants is part of a broader initiative launched by Altman and other tech companies to avoid regulation. They are promising that AI will fundamentally change the way the world works.
