Pokémon MMO Coming Soon for the Nintendo Switch Successor?

The big thing for the tenth generation of Pokémon (unbelievable, but we’re getting there in less than three decades!) could be opening it up to MMOs.

A successor to the Nintendo Switch is in the works, that much is clear. It has yet to be announced, but the big N will do so soon. One of its killer apps could be Gaia. That’s a codename for a Pokémon MMO. It’s rumored to be coming to the Switch along with its Switch successor. But how did all this leak out? The answer is both simple and scary: Game Freak, the developer of Pokémon, has been hacked.

The leak has resulted in source code leaks of older episodes (including Pokémon Black 2/White 2), as well as information about future projects. As a result of the hack, we’ve learned that the codename for Nintendo’s next-generation hardware is Ounce. Also, another project is in the works at Game Freak in collaboration with ILCA. It’s codenamed Synapse and will be a multiplayer, battle-centric title (Pokémon Stadium?).

Game Freak is not alone. Late last year, Insomniac Games also suffered a ransomware attack that gave us a glimpse into what one of PlayStation Studios’ core studios was up to; the team is known for their Ratchet & Clank and Marvel’s Spider-Man titles, but the leak also exposed the personal data of their employees, so they were hit hard.

If this is indeed a cross-generational Pokémon MMO, it could be another killer app available for two console generations at once. One of the Switch’s opening titles was one of these, and while many people forget, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was also released for the Wii U in March 2017. Perhaps Game Freak’s MMO could follow the same path. If this project does come to fruition, we can only hope that it won’t be in an extremely buggy state at launch.

In any case, leaks are no joke, and Nintendo is certainly annoyed about this.
