TECH NEWS – Leaked information has also suggested that a handheld version of the PlayStation 6 could be in the works…

A recent leak suggests that the next PlayStation console may already be in development – and hopefully, it will be much cheaper than previously thought. The news comes from a famous leaker named “Kelper,” who recently posted some information about Sony’s plans for the PlayStation 6 on a NeoGAF thread.

The leak was then compiled and amplified by another poster, HeisenbergFX4, in a separate thread, in which he elaborated on both of Kelper’s comments.

According to Kelper, “there’s two SoCs in development for next-gen, idk if it’s a Series X/S situation or home console + handheld, but probably one of them will be affordable at least.”

This comment was also supplemented by the clarification that “the two SoCs I mentioned in that thread are for PS6.”

Now, in case you don’t understand all the jargon that’s being thrown around here, “SoC” is short for “system on a chip.” An SoC is essentially a circuit board that contains most of the components that a modern electronic system needs, like the GPU, CPU, and RAM.

In the case of home consoles, these SoCs are always custom-made. In the case of the PlayStation 5, for example, the SoC was custom-made by both AMD and Sony.

Why is Sony developing two SoCs at once? There are several theories, but it’s possible that Kelper got it wrong with the Series X/S comparison. Sony could potentially be developing two different PS6 consoles at once, one less powerful but more affordable, and one better but obviously more expensive.

Alternatively, some commenters in the NeoGAF thread suggested that this could mean a handheld version of the PlayStation 6 could be in the works. This would explain why one of the SoCs would be cheaper. After all, Sony would undoubtedly charge more for the console version than for the handheld.

Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see what announcements Sony has in store for us. But considering that it’s been roughly three years between the release of the PlayStation 4 Pro and the announcement of the PlayStation 5… we’ll probably have to wait a while longer.
