ChatGPT: Don’t Expect GPT-5 Any Time Soon!

TECH NEWS – OpenAI’s CEO has admitted that his company’s priorities are elsewhere, so it’s best to be patient.

OpenAI has taken a revolutionary step forward in advancing artificial intelligence, demonstrating its potential with new products and updates to existing models. For example, there is SearchGPT, which aims to take on Meta and Google. However, OpenAI chief Sam Altman admitted that GPT-5 will not be coming soon.

There was a Q&A on Reddit where Altman confirmed that there will be many exciting big releases later this year, but that doesn’t include the new ChatGPT. More specifically, there will be no GPT-5 in 2024, and the company is instead focusing on the release of GPT-o1. This was previously called Project Strawberry, and differs from the other models in that it takes a slower, more methodical approach. This can be important in mathematical and scientific fields, where greater precision and logical reasoning are required.

“All of these models have become quite complex, and we can’t ship as many things in parallel as we’d like. We also face a lot of constraints and hard choices about [where] to allocate our computing resources,” Altman wrote. So they’ve somewhat lost control because the technology has evolved so much that they don’t have the resources to expand and develop it at the same pace…

Altman also wrote that OpenAI’s vision for AI is clear: they want to create AI that can act as an “agent” alongside users and perform tasks on its own. If the company achieves this, it could be another huge breakthrough, because it could do more than it does now (provide information with minimal human input). Finally, he also mentioned that in the future it will be possible to interact with AI as adults without restrictions, although this has several challenges, so it is still a step for them to consider.

So we can expect ChatGPT version 5 next year at the earliest…
