Nintendo Switch: Company Confidence Dips as Momentum Slows

Nintendo has been a bit cautious with its predictions, so it’s not sure if the Switch will be able to beat the PlayStation 2’s record…

In today’s news, there was already talk of a successor, which has been given a feature that will eat into Switch sales if the two platforms are available at the same time for some time. So with sales slowing, it’s not certain that the Switch will catch up to the PS2. In the last quarter (ending September 30), 2.62 million Switch units were sold (down 31% from the previous year…). No ratio information were given for the base model, the Lite, or the OLED portion of the Switch. This brings the total number of Switch units sold to 146.04 million. In the last three months, 39.64 million games were sold, bringing the total to 1306.1 million. That’s an average of 8.94 games purchased for a Switch.

For this fiscal year (April 2024 to the end of March 2025), Nintendo had hoped to sell 13.5 million Switch games, but in its new annual report it was revised down to 12.5 million, as last year the Mario movie took over game sales, as did The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This year, the Japanese company didn’t have such a big hit in the first half of the fiscal year, and as a result, they cut their profit forecast by 10%…

Here’s a list of the top 10 first-party titles:

  1.         Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 64.27 million
  2.         Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 46.45 million
  3.         Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 35.14 million
  4.         The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 32.29 million
  5.         Super Mario Odyssey – 28.50 million
  6.         Pokemon Sword / Pokemon Shield – 26.44 million
  7.         Pokemon Scarlet / Pokemon Violet – 25.69 million
  8.         The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – 21.04 million
  9.         Super Mario Party – 20.98 million
  10. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe – 17.77 million

Newly announced sales figures:

  • Nintendo Switch Sports – 14.37 million
  • The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom – 2.58 million (New)
  • Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (2024) – 1.94 million
  • Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD – 1.57 million

If they have lowered their revenue expectations, they will NOT launch the successor to the Switch by the end of March, in the current fiscal year!
