Black Phone 2 is Shooting – Here’s What the Director Posted About the Anticipated Horror Sequel!

MOVIE NEWS – The sequel to the 2021 horror hit, Black Phone 2, has received an exciting update from the director…

Director Scott Derrickson has given us a slightly belated but very pleasant seasonal treat. With news that will please horror fans, especially if you loved his 2021 horror film, Black Phone. It looks like the cameras are already rolling on Black Phone 2. The director shared a little insight to let everyone know that filming for the highly anticipated horror sequel is already in full swing. Derrickson shared a photo from the set on his X/Twitter page, which shows the sequel’s logo on the back of the director’s chair. The caption is sweet and simple: “Filming on Black Phone 2 began today.” The post didn’t reveal any other details about the sequel, and it’s likely to remain that way for a while as fans eagerly await what Derrickson and his team will come up with.

Many fans have wondered how a sequel to Black Phone could be made, given that the first film ended with a seemingly definitive ending.

With that in mind, Derrickson’s co-writer C. Robert Cargill, who co-wrote the first film and is returning to write the sequel, hinted at the idea on the X-Men website. Cargill said after Sinister 2 that he wouldn’t do another sequel if it wasn’t as good as the first film. While he can’t reveal much about Black Phone 2, since he’s also back for the sequel, it’s possible they had a pretty good idea for the sequel to rework the story and characters. Check out what he had to say about the horror sequel below:

“Not a lot I can talk about, but after my experience with SINISTER 2 (you can hear about on Scott Weinberg’s OVERHATED podcast) I swore I wouldn’t make another sequel unless it could be as good as the 1st. Reader, we’re SUPER proud of this script & cast and hope we do you proud.”

Can Black Phone 2 repeat the unexpected success of the first movie?

Black Phone, based on Joe Hill’s short story of the same name, follows a young boy named Finney (Mason Thames) who is kidnapped by a child killer, the Grabber (Ethan Hawke). All hope seems lost for Finney as he is locked in the Grabber’s lair until he discovers a black rotary phone that allows him to communicate with the spirits of the killer’s past victims, who help him plan his escape. The film also stars Thames and Hawke, along with Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and James Ransone.

When Black Phone was released in 2022, the film was a surprise hit, grossing $161.4 million worldwide on a budget of just $18 million. The film was also a hit with critics, with an 81% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Hawke received praise for his portrayal of the villain, and the film’s young cast was also singled out for their excellent performances. Black Phone 2 was officially announced in October 2023, with Hawke, Thames, McGraw, and Davies set to return.
