Tom Cruise Teams Up with Doug Liman for Their First Horror Movie: Deeper

MOVIE NEWS – Tom Cruise is reuniting with director Doug Liman for a new project, but it’s not the Edge of Tomorrow sequel fans have been hoping for. Instead, the duo is tackling a mature, classic-style horror movie, moving in a fresh direction after their sci-fi and action successes like Edge of Tomorrow (2014) and American Made (2017).

Deeper was first announced in 2016, but it has since seen numerous changes in directors and actors, with names like Idris Elba, Gal Gadot, Kornel Mundruczo, and Baltasar Kormakur attached at various points. The project appeared to be stuck in development hell, but Cruise’s recent deal with Warner Bros. may finally give it a new lease on life.

Doug Liman shared details about their latest collaboration during a special screening of the documentary Gaucho Gaucho. According to Showbiz 411, Liman described this as their first attempt at creating a “scary” movie, an entirely new genre for both of them. While no timeline for production has been confirmed, more updates are expected soon.

What Do We Know About Deeper?

Written by Max Landis, Deeper is described as a “supernatural thriller.” The plot follows a disgraced astronaut who ventures into a newly discovered trench, thought to be the Earth’s lowest point. However, the deeper he descends, the more his sanity begins to unravel as he encounters a dark and sinister force.

The script was initially purchased by MGM for a seven-figure sum but faced years of stagnation. The project suffered another blow when allegations of misconduct against Landis surfaced, prompting MGM to drop the script entirely. It remained in limbo until Cruise’s recent deal with Warner Bros. reignited interest.

In January, Cruise signed a major agreement with Warner Bros. to produce original and franchise films. Whether this collaboration played a role in reviving Deeper remains unclear, but the project now seems closer than ever to going into production. And who knows, after Cruise wraps up his run in the Mission: Impossible franchise, perhaps he and Liman will revisit the long-awaited Edge of Tomorrow sequel that fans have been anticipating since 2019.
