MOVIE NEWS – Two years ago, Jim Carrey claimed he had retired so thoroughly from acting that only a script written in golden ink could lure him back to the camera. Yet, he is making a dual-role comeback in Sonic the Hedgehog 3: he reprises his role as Dr. Robotnik, the brilliant yet mad scientist, while also portraying the character’s equally eccentric grandfather, Gerald Robotnik.
Carrey’s earlier remark clearly didn’t go unnoticed, as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 director Jeff Fowler jokingly referenced it in an interview with SFX magazine: “We printed the script for him in 24-carat gold ink and placed it on the shiny threshold of his home just to coax him back.”
Carrey fully embraced his return by immersing himself in the creation of his second character. “He obviously got really excited about playing a completely new character within this familiar world,” the director continued. “He invented every tiny detail and essentially designed Gerald’s look from the ground up. It was meticulously planned down to the last inch. This was my third film with Jim Carrey, but I’ve never seen him this energized before.”
In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, there isn’t just a dual role for Robotnik, but also for Sonic, as Shadow makes his debut—a darker version of our favorite spiky hero. Fans are already buzzing about how Shadow, a complex and morally ambiguous character, could steal the spotlight, especially since Keanu Reeves lends his voice to the role in the original version.
