MOVIE NEWS – Disney has not yet contacted the actor to play Jack Sparrow, but there is a script, say sources close to the film and Johnny Depp.
The never-ending soap opera of Pirates of the Caribbean and Johnny Depp has reached a new chapter. Sources close to the project assure that the producer of the saga, Jerry Bruckheimer, is currently overseeing two scripts, one with the actor, clearly in preparation for the case that Jack Sparrow decides to return to the field.
And this is not information posted on social media by a dubious insider. In a report yesterday by Variety, he shared an update on the project, which is not as promising as we might think. The source states that Disney “has not ruled anything out”. But he also notes that the star and the conglomerate have not yet spoken to each other. In other words, the first approach has not even been made, so it is difficult to hope.
“Not for 300 million”, but would Johnny Depp return to the saga?
The relationship between Disney and the Edward Scissorhands actor was strained a few years ago when Disney decided to fire the star after his ex-partner Amber Heard accused him of assault. However, Depp won a defamation lawsuit against the actress in 2022, and since then, there has been talk of a possible return to Pirates of the Caribbean, which Depp quickly dismissed: “I wouldn’t return for 300 million,” he said at the time.
Bruckheimer, the producer of the saga, has never hidden his desire to have the actor back.
He also confirmed a few months ago that he is working on two Pirates of the Caribbean projects, each very different from the previous one, where Johnny Depp seems to have no place. One would be a reboot, written by Jeff Nathanson (Mufasa: The Lion King), and the other a spin-off, which is said to be led by Margot Robbie and written by Christina Hodson. Although, of course, there was also talk that if Jack Sparrow were to return, it would only be in the form of a cameo.
In any case, it is clear that Disney wants to bring back the saga, which has earned more than $ 4.5 billion with just five films. Time is running out for a possible agreement, and the existence of two scripts makes it clear that they do not want to wait any longer. The question will probably be decided soon, in 2025 at the latest…
